Dr. Christopher Drew
Department Manager
Sustainability Masdar
Dr Christopher Drew is the sustainability Manager for Abu Dhabi’s Masdar City Development. Masdar will be a mixed use city, home to approximately 50,000 residents and a destination for a further 50,000 commuters and visitors. It is the world’s first truly sustainable city – meeting all its energy demands from on-site renewable power generation, with no fossil fuel use (even by cars) within the city and complete waste diversion away from landfill. Beyond this it will be
carbon neutral following construction – through selection for material with low embodied energy, reduced energy cost of construction and offsetting.Prior to working at Masdar, Chris was the environment and
sustainability manager for the Abu Dhabi Airport Expansion
Programme, where he worked for two years on this landmark 7 billion dollar project. For the eight year prior to this Chris worked as environmental projects manager for the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, where he was responsible for carrying out baseline environmental surveys in the empty quarter desert of Abu Dhabi.
Christopher’s PhD thesis was entitled “Aspects of the ecology and management of the Desert hare Lepus capensis in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates” and he received his Doctorate from the University of Stirling, Scotland in 2005. Whilst he considers an ecological background (rather than an engineering or architectural background) unusual for a sustainability manager, Chris likes to think that understanding how animals – not just humans and desert hares – manage to survive within their own environments and how environmental pressures (such as global warming, pollution and habitat loss) can dramatically affect their survival, puts things very clearly into perspective and helps drive him toward developing and implementing sustainable solutions.
